Sister Act The Musical

The American comedy film written by Joseph Howard, starring Whoopi Goldberg is adapted as a musical.

What is it about nuns that is so damn funny? By some divine intervention Whoopie Goldberg has taken the 1992 blockbuster film Sister Act and turned it into a West End hit musical

Like all film to stage adaptations, expectations were high and Patina Miller certainly delivers with impressive vocals as the Las Vegas club singer Deloris Van Cartier. Whilst Miller may lack the visual awkwardness that added to Whoopie's natural comic flair, she certainly provides enough alley cat edge to aid the obvious humour of a Las Vegas club singer hiding out as a nun. Stage veteran, Sheila Hancock is also excellent as the Mother Superior gracefully acting her habit off as the "straight nun" to the new and improved Deloris; Sister Mary Clarence.

Whilst the score has a familiar sounding Motown vibe that tends to wash over you, the real hope and prayer of this production is predictably the nuns! Like a parcel of pesky penguins their Vegas showgirl routines, that grow in glitz with each performance, are a hysterical highlight. Chubby and chirpy, Claire Greenway's Sister Mary Patrick captures the mood and spirit of the show, whilst the pure voice of Katie Rowley-Jones's Sister Mary Robert carries the heart.

However, the real nun of the night has to go to Julia Sutton as Sister Mary Lazerus. An old, cranky, rapping nun gets Itchy's vote every time with her classic MC delivery. Add to that some farcical nuns on the run, a Barry White baddie and the Pope mystically rising from the music pit and you'll be ready to endure the sinful pleasure that is Sister Act.
