Les Miserables Theatre Break at the Edinburgh Playhouse

Gareth Gates, runner-up in one of the first phone-in TV talent shows, is to lead the cast of a new touring production of the world's longest-running musical, which includes the song which made Susan Boyle an overnight star.

The tale of the Parisian poor dreaming of a better life is the perfect show for Gates who, much like Susan Boyle eight years later, was the subject of ridicule before he proved his worth with his singing voice.

Gates will star as Marius in the new production of "Les Mis", which is coming to The Playhouse on 20 April.

A Playhouse spokeswoman said: "We are thrilled to have Les Miserables return to Edinburgh next year, it's a firm favourite and I'm sure that Gareth Gates will go down a storm the city."

The show also features Broadway and West End star John Owen Jones, who plays the central character Jean Valjean, an ex-convict who struggles to find redemption in 19th century Paris.
